Driver Still Sought in Fatal Wreck on US 17

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues its search for the truck driver responsible for causing a fatal accident on US Highway 17 yesterday.

Troopers say the crash happened when a semi crossed the center line. Lashawnda Fields of Yemassee, 25, swerved to avoid it, but then she crossed the center line and ran head on into another car. She died in the collision.

The other driver, Cecil West of Beaufort, was airlifted to Savannah.

If you have any information, call the highway patrol office in Ridgeland at 843.726.8076.

To improve the safety of the road, the Department of Transportation is putting in rumble strips in the no-passing zones to cut down on the number of wrecks. The highway patrol is also stepping up its patrol in that deadly area.
