Guardsmen Raise Money for Sick Girl's Dream Trip

They dedicate their lives to defending our country, and now members of the 165th Airlift Wing are going the extra mile to help a little girl. They raised more than $4,000 to make Lauren Dotson's dream come true.

The eight-year-old girl was diagnosed with medulloblastoma last year. After surgery to remove a tumor from the back of her brain, six weeks of radiation and a year of chemotherapy, Lauren is recovering. Now, thanks to the 165th and the Make-a-Wish foundation.

She and her family are making the trip of a lifetime to New York City.

"I'm going on a carriage ride, to see a Broadway play and to the American Girl place," said Lauren.

"It warms our hearts," said Capt. David Smith of the 165th Airlift Wing. "We kind of wish we could be with her to see the excitement and the glow on her face as she goes to New York and has her dream come true."

With her 165th teddy bear in tow, Lauren and her family will be picked up in New York in a limousine. She'll also visit the Empire State Building, Ground Zero, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
