Helicopters Evacuated to Savannah Base

Hurricane Dennis is causing evacuations along the Gulf Coast, even at military bases. This afternoon, seven Chinook helicopters landed at Hunter Army Airfield. The choppers are being evacuated from Fort Rucker, Alabama, ahead of the storm.

Pilots and crew dropped the helicopters off, then flew back to Alabama to weather out the hurricane with their families.

Military officials say securing the choppers was top priority. "We are training all the aviators in the Army," said Capt. Jennifer Hebert from Fort Rucker. "We train over 1,000 aviators each year, so it's very important to protect our asset."

A total of 19 Chinooks from Fort Rucker will be housed at Hunter at least through next Tuesday, and at least ten helicopters from Naval Air Station Whiting Field in Pensacola, Florida, will also call Hunter their temporary home until the storm passes.
