RICHMOND HILL, GA (WTOC) - A road widening project that has been in the works for years is set to begin next year.
According to Richmond Hill City Councilman Russ Carpenter, the Georgia Department of Transportation has announced the widening of Georgia Highway 144 will begin in Spring 2018. The plan to widen a five-mile stretch of GA 144 from Timber Trail to Belfast River Road has been in the works since 2010.
"The road is really congested and we have been working with the Georgia Department of Transportation which has been excellent in meeting our needs," said Carpenter. "We have also been working with the county to make this project happen because part of the widening is in the county."
Under the plan, GA 144 would go from two lanes to four lanes with a grass median and sidewalks. City leaders say it's needed as traffic flow and growth continues.
"To say this a great thing or a great achievement for Richmond Hill is an understatement," said Carpenter.
Carpenter said the city has also worked to make sure it is in line to receive any federal transportation funds available in the future.
