SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Many in Savannah and beyond are celebrating the life of Scott Waldrup. The general manager of "The Grey" restaurant who died after being hit during a police chase on Bay Street early Wednesday morning.
Pulaski Square was packed with family, friends and those who simply wanted to honor and celebrate the life of Waldrup. It was clear he touched and meant a lot to many in this community.
"He was a firework. And on the 4th of July, he went out like a firework."
A close friend and co-worker of Waldrup's, Mashama Bailey was with Waldrup and just steps away when he was hit and killed early Wednesday morning.
Bailey was one of a handful of close friends and family to speak at Friday's celebration of life, taking place in Waldrup's favorite square in Savannah.
Around Pulaski Square, there were pictures of Waldrup and many brought flowers. Easily more than 100 people showed up and shared their cherished memories of Waldrup with one another, and tears and hugs accompanied smiles and laughter through many of those stories.
"I am praying and hoping that this incident will help Savannah to get to the next plane, to learn to love one another, and come together as all people. Which is what Scott really wanted everyone to do always anyway. So, he loved everyone, we love everyone. We thank you for everything you have done for him. He loved you," Waldrup's mother said.
