BAXLEY, GA (WTOC) -

The couple arrested for the bizarre Baxley assault appeared in court for the first time since surrendering Wednesday.

The separate hearings for Eric and Latasha Smith didn't last long and were the first time we've seen them since the video now seen around the world.

Eric Smith and his wife surrendered in Bryan County Wednesday to answer charges here in Baxley. A judge explained they both face charges of aggravated battery and cruelty to a child. Eric Smith faces two counts.

The video shows a woman assaulting the owner of a takeout stand and a man punching the owner's teenage daughter.

Tips to police led them to the Smiths as the people in the video.

I spoke to the victim about their surrender and she had only one question to them.

“Why?? What was the deal? You complained about your chicken, I refunded your money. Then what happened? It was just uncalled for,” said Jeannette Norris.

Judge Ronnie Lewis told both he considered them a flight risk and a threat to the community and denied bond.

They'll remain in jail until their attorney requests a bond hearing in Superior Court.
