COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirmed a badly charred body was found in the trunk of a car Monday morning in South Columbus.

The car was found at the intersection of Harbison Court and Harbison Drive. He says the body is male and officials will be on scene for at least six to eight hours investigating the scene.

"Well I walked up to the car and we've got a charred, very charred body in the trunk of a car. I can tell he's a male and that's about all we can tell right now. I pronounced at 7:50 this morning," said Muscogee County Coroner, Buddy Bryan.

Neighbors say they are in shock this would happen in their area.

"For something like this, to wake up in the morning and come out your door and see a burnt up car with a body in it. I don't think it's right," said Jackie- Ann Clark, who lives off Harbison Drive.

Clark says the neighborhood is usually peaceful.

"I've never seen nothing like this on this street. This a quiet street. All our neighbors stick together around here. I can't believe it, it's too much going on," said Clark.

Bryan says because of the condition of the burned body it could take weeks before an identity is known.  The body is being sent to Atlanta for an autopsy.

The owner of the car is currently not known.

If you have any information, you are asked to contact Columbus police at (706) 653-3400.
