Savannah firefighters' Technical Rescue Team had to be called into action overnight to free a victim from wreckage after a serious accident.
About 2:30am, police and firefighters were called to the corner of Harmon Street and Park Avenue where they found a car literally wrapped around a utility pole. The impact snapped the car in half and splintered the pole.
The driver was pinned in the car with the roof caved in on his arm. Firefighters used the Jaws of Life, and Capt. Ira Harper says it took them less than a half hour to free the victim.
He lost his leg in the accident, but he was still alive when ambulance crews rushed him to Memorial Health.
Police say the man had just been released from prison for stealing cars and they were checking to see if the car he was driving at the time of the accident had recently been stolen.
His name has not yet been released.
