SCCPSS launches new volunteer initiative: Operation Beacon

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

If you have some free time to spare, the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System needs your help.

The school district is launching a new initiative to get more volunteers in the school, Operation Beacon. The school district is looking for volunteers to help push the system’s schools in the right direction

This is a new initiative launched by the district to help foster a better relationship with the community. This opportunity will give you the chance to do things like volunteer in the school's office, become a classroom helper, tutoring and mentoring and extracurricular activities and special events.

"From a community standpoint, it is very necessary that each and everybody do what they can do lend a helping hand to the kids who are in need," said volunteer, Timothy Sparks.

"Someone who lives down the street - maybe sees students walking back and forth from school every day. They get an opportunity to be in the schoolhouse, work with those school students, get to know them, and just have an idea of what's going on in their neighborhood. I think it brings the whole community closer," said Sheila Blanco, SCCPSS, Public Information Manager. Some folks, they're teachers. They're good mentors for children. Some people may not have that expertise or feel they don't have that expertise. Well, maybe they can be used for an hour or two filling in the office per week. I mean, there are all kinds of jobs. As many jobs as you can do in a school, they could use assistance with."

New superintendent Dr. Ann Levett posted a message to Youtube regarding the new initiative and why you should get involved.

“We recognize that one of the key components for a successful school is a strong connection we have with the community,” Levett said. “That's why we launched Operation Beacon: Communities lighting the way for tomorrow's leaders.”
