SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

An alleged purse snatcher is behind bars in Savannah after several citizens chased him down.

Police say 26-year-old Cody Wyramon was arrested on a charge of robbery by force immediately after the incident, Tuesday evening. They say a woman was walking with her two juvenile children near Jefferson and W. Bryan streets around 10:45 p.m., when a man approached her from behind, grabbed her purse, and knocked her to the ground.

She and her two children starting running after him, and several people in the area heard the victim screaming her purse was stolen, and they joined in the chase. They stopped the suspect in a gravel parking lot at Jefferson and Congress streets, and one of the citizens held him until police arrived.

"We commend these citizens for going above and beyond to help assist the victim," Sgt. Roger Mydell, Robbery Unit Supervisor, said in a release. "Their actions resulted in a swift arrest and the recovery of the victim's belongings."

Wyramon is being held in the Chatham County Jail without bond.

Businesses in City Market say they are seeing more people than ever despite the recent violence and criminal activity. The purse snatching happened right outside of Wet Willie's and they offer their sympathies and a helping hand.

"We are wholeheartedly willing to be involved in any way shape or form to make sure Savannah is as safe as it can be and it is very important to us to increase the safety,” said Wet Willie’s Executive Vice President Emily Dickinson.

One tourist spoke to us about how she would try to keep anything bad from happening to her.

"Obviously, you need to be aware of your surroundings and aware of where your wallet and your phone is. I feel perfectly safe,” said Amy Robertson, a tourist from Charlotte, NC.

SCMPD wants to commend those citizens who helped assist the victim and apprehend the suspect.
