Operation Southern Shield coming to a close

GEORGIA, SOUTH CAROLINA (WTOC) -

We're half way through a week-long sting aimed at slowing down drivers on the interstate.

Operation Southern Shield is a multi-jurisdiction operation across the southeast. The operation began on Monday and Georgia and South Carolina are just two of several states participating in the sting.

The number of speeding-related traffic fatalities has almost doubled in Georgia from 2012 to 2015.  There were 268 speeding-related traffic deaths in the state in 2015, which was a 25 percent increase from 2014.

The number of traffic deaths in Georgia has increased in the last two years after declining for nine consecutive years. Speeding remains a leading cause of fatal traffic crashes and is often associated with other factors attributed to traffic deaths including impaired driving, distracted driving and reckless driving.

Operation Southern Shield is being held in July between other major highway safety campaigns to coincide with the larger-than-normal numbers of drivers on roads because of summer travel, Alabama officials said.
