SCREVEN CO., GA (WTOC) -

You think of summer as the time for teachers and students to take a break, but one Screven County teacher hits the road each week to work with students who might not get tutoring otherwise.

Bring a school bus to most neighborhoods in the summer, and kids run the other away. However, In Screven County, that bus will be standing room only. The Tech Bus visits neighborhoods each Tuesday and Thursday of the summer. Middle school math teacher, Brad Waits, takes the mobile hot spot classroom to youngsters and uses laptops or tablets to help them work in skills like spelling or history, as well as helping older ones avoid trouble.

"Two days a week, I get out and they get to get on the bus. Their parents know where they are and they're learning something productive," Waits said.

The bus comes through a partnership between Screven County Schools and the local Community Collaborative. Parents say visits from the bus also keep their children mentally active during the summer.

"It's helpful because it keeps them in touch with what they learned in school during the summer. They're not out of practice when they go back to school," said mom, Tabatha McClellan.

They hope to expand services with the bus to parents - taking it out to work with them or resume writing, or going back to school.

Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving. But they are also on the hunt for anyone who is distracted while driving.  "Well I checked the jail when I left a few minutes ago and we have openings," s...More >>
