The last few summers, compassion has flowed from the Isle of Hope to Macon in the form of home improvement projects. This week, the current of goodwill is flowing the other way, with the River of Life Program.

"It feels good because we're helping people and we're painting and we're making them happy and stuff," said student volunteer, Ethan Finley.

Middle and high school students are also making a difference in several Savannah communities, painting homes for residents who are not capable of doing the work themselves. The Isle of Hope Methodist Church has sent students to Macon to participate in the River of Life Summer Mission Program for years. This year is the first time River of Life has come to Savannah, bringing together local kids with others from churches across the state on service projects.

"Just to practice presence by recognizing others where they are. So, yeah, there is a Christian element to it and also, we believe we should be serving," said student volunteer, said team leader, Tyler Ward.

The City of Savannah's Housing Department helps coordinate the program and supplies, and most of the materials.

"We're actually helping 40 residents this week. We have three groups down here that are doing outstanding work," said Rashawn Anthony, City of Savannah Housing Department.

However, it's the young workers who are sprucing up homes, improving neighborhoods, and touching lives.

"It's just really rewarding seeing how the homeowners are when we've completed it, and they see how new their house looks because even a coat of paint can make such a difference," said student volunteer, Carolina Gilpin.

As it will for one East Savannah homeowner when the paint dries on her house.

"She's going to like it when she comes back and sees it, I bet," Finley said.

The visiting student volunteers came from several churches near Atlanta and Columbus.
