SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The new superintendent for Chatham County Public Schools held a convocation to celebrate the beginning of the 2017-2018 academic year.

The event acknowledges the achievements of the district, sets the agenda for the organization and invites us to look ahead to another year of excellence. Dr. Ann Levett says a priority will continue to be to help the schools with lower performance but also points out other goals for the year.

"One of the things we want to make a point of making sure everybody knows is that they've made some great strides. We've seen some success and some progress there, so continuing to build on that and accelerating it, but also to initiate some other action that will help build community," Dr. Levett said.

Aug. 3 is the first day back to school for Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools.
