Exciting Bed Races at Beaufort Water Festival

There are a few things that are synonymous with Beaufort Water Festival: The Whistlers, concerts, and the bed races!

Five teams were pre-registered, but the Festival crew don't mind stragglers; and a last minute entry made for an action packed race down Bay Street.

1. Fripp Island Resort

2. Have A Nice Day, a Forrest Gump themed team

3. Tigers on Top, a Clemson fan team

4. The Stoehrer Family

5. CrossFit Beaufort

6. Lohr Plumbing

7. The Commodore and The Pirettes

CrossFit Beaufort registered last, but came in first with the fastest time, even after one of their runners took a tumble! He's okay, even smiling at the crowd, yelling, "No pain, no gain!"

The sponsor of the race, Lohr Plumbing, with their appropriate emoji and plungers for hats were a fan favorite, screaming, "We're number two!"

A nice touch was a family who just wanted to have fun on a Friday night together. Sean Stoehrer said the hardest part was the spinning, "Because you had to stop on slipper ground, and then turn, and then hold on and say a prayer!"  Half way down the race route on Bay Street, the teams have to stop, spin the gurney 360 degrees and then continue their sprint to the finish line.

Last but not least was the Commodore Jason Berry and the Pirettes dressed in patriotic gear.  It seems like the crowd knows to save a ton of water for them every year and a very colorful ending with all sorts of powdered floor and glitter.

When asked after watching the race for years, was he prepared, Commodore Berry said, "Oh absolutely not, but this is a great feeling to come down here and do this, and be a part of the bed race with all these ladies pushing you, it's really fun to do this."

Saturday, WTOC will air and live stream the parade starting at 10am. Mike Cihla will be hosting the parade.

Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving. But they are also on the hunt for anyone who is distracted while driving.  "Well I checked the jail when I left a few minutes ago and we have openings," s...More >>
