SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Dozens of kids and parents spent Saturday learning about aquatic animals through fun and educational experiences.

The Savannah Children's Museum hosted Splash Fest. It gave participants the chance to interact with horseshoe crabs, shells and Terrapin turtles. The annual event uses the hot July weather to get families involved in outdoor water activities.

Parents say these kind of hands on experiences are great learning tools.

"It's fantastic as a parent to really be able to have that interactive experience," said Kellen Jahn, Parent. "That's how much she learns. She really learns as she gets to be involved with everything, and not just see, but to touch as well. So this has been a great learning and fun experience for her."

"We want kids to have fun and not really know that they're learning, but then go home and take some of this information and surprise their parents with what they've learned for the day," said Jessica Paterson, Savannah Children's Museum Operation Supervisor.

Museum staff also hosted water science experiments to teach about things like sound vibration and color mixing. There were also sea creature arts and crafts.
