BURTON, SC (WTOC) -

An employee of Unique Cuts Barber Shop showed up to work on Sunday morning only to find the inside heavily damaged by smoke and heat, this according to the Burton Fire District.

Officials received the call just after 9:30 a.m. The shop, located on Jennings Road, had no active fire but heavy heat and smoke damage throughout the building was visible. The damage is believed to have been caused by a small fire that started in the shop overnight, causing the building to turn into a virtual oven. The fire self extinguished.

Burton fire crews used thermal imaging to make sure that the was out. No further extinguishment was needed from crews.

The fire is still under investigation, although Burton fire investigators believe the fire was electrical. They say a small, possibly electrical, fire started but did not grow or spread to the doors and windows being closed for the evening.

The lack of oxygen kept the fire from spreading, but did generate intense heat and died out.

Fire officials say the damage is extensive. They also say this is a very unique fire , saying this highlights fire's most deadly aspects: lack of oxygen and smoke.

Unique Cuts will be temporary relocating to Ochun's Professional Styling Salon on Tuesday. The address is 14 Parris Island Gateway.
