CANDLER CO., GA (WTOC) -

A South Carolina novelist with South Georgia roots says she drew on her small town upbringing for her first published work.

Author J.C. Sasser says her growing up in Candler County influenced her novel, "Gradle Bird." She says the book draws on memories of people she knew and even some correspondence with them. In the Southern Gothic style, it tells of a young girl growing up who is shaped by the people in her own small town.

"When there's tragedy in a small town, everybody feels it. When there's joy in a small town, everybody feels it because you know those people," Sasser said.

The book is available online through most distributors and it's also available in independent book stores.
