EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie sadly announced the passing of retired K-9 Corporal Arasja (AJ) on Monday.

AJ was part of the U.S. Military working dog program. She was gifted to the Effingham County Sheriff's Department in 2010 where she worked as a K-9 with the Patrol Division trained in apprehension, narcotics detection, and tracking.

Sheriff McDuffie says AJ was responsible for dozens of arrests and the recovery of thousands of dollars in illegal narcotics throughout her career.

AJ was a Belgian Malinois born in 2005. She was retired in 2014 and continued to live with her handler as a part of the family.
