RIDGELAND, SC (WTOC) -

A Ridgeland man who broke into a 61-year-old woman's home and sexually assaulted her has been sentenced to 28 years in prison, according to the Fourteenth Circuit Solicitor's Office.

Officials say 25-year-old Kyshon Jemeel Jenkins plead guilty to first-degree burglary and first-degree criminal sexual conduct at the Jasper County Courthouse on Tuesday.

Authorities say the burglary and attack took place back in August of 2015, just after 10:30 the night of the 16. The victim woke up to find an armed man standing in her bedroom who threatened to kill her if she made any noises. She tried to distract him by telling him there were some prescription medications in the kitchen. While he was in there, she ran from her home and to a neighbor's house. While she was waiting for police to get there, she saw him walking from her house.

DNA positively linked Jenkins as the person who raped her.

'Prosecuting sexual assault cases is taken very seriously and is a top priority by each prosecutor within our office,' Assistant Solicitor Patrick Hall said in a release. 'The state was ready to move forward with this case, but the defendant decided to plead guilty before a trial got underway.'

The Solicitor's Office says Jenkins' record dates back to 2010 and includes convictions for drug distribution and indecent exposure.

Circuit Court Judge Perry Buckner handed down the sentence.
