SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Visit Savannah weighing in tonight after reporting a successful June for hotel occupancy and room rates.

Compared to the same period last year, the report shows about a 4.5 percent increase. The number currently sitting at 78.6 percent total occupancy.

According to Visit Savannah President Joseph Marinelli, it's more than numbers.

"At the end of the day, tourism is about economic development for our community and really putting people to work. Everybody that you and I know probably has a friend or family member that works in the tourism or hospitality industry, so it's all about jobs,” Marinelli said.

One more important number to throw out, Savannah's tourism increase over the previous year tops overall occupancy for the entire state, by nearly 10 percent.
