SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The first day of school means new classes, new lessons, and new expenses.

On Thursday, the community came together to help Hunter Army Airfield families lessen the financial burden. The HAAF Morale Welfare Recreation Office held a job fair to help military families get started on the path to the first day of school. The same group sponsored the same event at Fort Stewart earlier this week, making information, advice, and free supplies available to the 9,000 school-aged children residing on the two installations.

"You have people that are here for the community, to support the community, and here to donate their time just to see service members making it with their families," said SFC Shontavious Wilkerson, volunteered at back to school fair.

"We take the opportunity to really welcome new families to Hunter that have come in over the summer break. For a lot of these families, this is their first exposure to what MWR services are and also to what the post, in general, has to offer them and the community at large. Anything we can do to help these families get started. We know supplies can be demanding. They get expensive when you have multiple children, so this takes a little of the edge off, getting them a leg up as they move forward with the school year," said Dov Estroff, Hunter MWR Special Events Coordinator.

While agencies, companies, and non-profit organizations fielded questions, Operation Homefront provided free backpacks filled with school supplies, to make the return to school easier.

"I don't know, but here in the States, everything is expensive. I didn't know that. I went to the market and I was like, 'wow.' It's just expensive," said Claudine Vallade, attended back to school fair. "It helps us to put some extra supplies in their backpacks."

The first day of school in Chatham County is Aug. 3.
