Dr. Angela Canfield with Sandfly Family Dental is donating custom-made mouth guards - valued at more than $19,000 - to the Bethesda Academy football team for the 2017 season.

Dr. Canfield took impressions of the players' teeth on Thursday and made them in the school's colors - navy and gold. The mouth guards provide stability to the players' jaws and cushion blows that can cause severe dental injuries such as broken teeth, fractured jaws, gum lacerations, and injuries to their lips or tongues.

"We love to give back to the community and work with kids, so that's how this started," Dr. Canfield said.

"We are really grateful because mouth guards prevent concussions, and safety is number one here," said Head Football Coach, Antwan Turner, Bethesda Academy.

This marks the third year Dr. Canfield has picked a local sports team to receive the free mouth guards. Applications for next year must be submitted to her office by Friday, Sept. 1 to be considered.
