Officials slowed traffic along Dean Forest Road between Interstate 16 and Highway 17 as they removed a woman who was entrapped in her vehicle on Sunday afternoon.

Officials say an 89-year-old woman, identified as Sarah Frances Drayton, lost control of her car. We're told Drayton swerved off the road, hit a curb and then crashed into a pole.

Drayton was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Officials have confirmed that she passed away as a result of those injuries.

The wreck happened right after 2 p.m. and the woman was removed a little after 3 p.m. They had to use the Jaws of Life to saw the car in half in order to get Drayton out.

A resident who lives across the street says he immediately ran to help.

"It hit the median," said Cornelius Williams, Witness. "Went up into the air. Landed in the ditch. When it hit the ditch it went airborne and hit the pole. When it hit the pole it started a little fire. We all ran over there and tried to pull the door down to get the lady out. We noticed she was stuck so we tried to break the door down. We opened up the back door and tried to get her out the back. We couldn't because she was stuck. Her arm and everything was busted open. The engine and the whole truck was sitting on her legs so there was nothing we could do."

That's when they waited for emergency vehicles to respond.

Drayton would have been taken to the hospital by a medical helicopter, but there were issues with the helicopter.

Investigators are still looking into what caused Drayton to run off the road, but say it was probably a medical condition looking at her age.

She had a dog with her in the car. Officers say the dog was okay before Chatham Animal Services took it from the scene.
