SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro’s Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating a crash that resulted in multiple injuries on the Bull River Bridge on Highway 80 late Sunday night.

It happened around 11 p.m. and resulted in the bridge being shut down for several hours.

SCMPD says a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by John Weeks, 30, of Martinez, Ga., ran out of gas and was stalled in the westbound lane of the bridge. A Kia Spectra driven by Lobsang Gyalsten, 24, of Raleigh, N.C., was also headed westbound. Gyalsten saw the stalled vehicle at the last second and attempted to pass the vehicle on its left side. Gyalsten’s vehicle struck the rear of Week’s vehicle, sending it into the eastbound lane. A Ford Escape driven by James Taylor, 54, of Fort Lawn, S.C., was traveling eastbound and struck the vehicle. All of the occupants from Taylor and Gyalsten’s vehicle were transported to a hospital for treatment.

Reportedly, a total of five people were transported. Officials say at least one person was treated for serious injuries.

Metro police and Southside Fire responded.
