SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

As students across the state get ready to head back to school, state officials are ramping up their safety efforts.

The Governor's Office of Highway Safety is partnering with Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools and other agencies to make sure your children remain safe while traveling to school.

AAA is once again highlighting their “School's Open, Drive Carefully” campaign. Designed to help reduce the number of child pedestrian fatalities and injuries, the campaign urges drivers to have a number of safety factors in mind as another school year begins.

With an average of 65 students per bus and the additional number of students who walk to and from school every day, there will be a lot more little ones on the road as Georgia's 2017-2018 school year kicks off statewide. That's why GOHS is joining AAA and local schools and law enforcement across the state to help reinforce safety and remind motorists how to behave in school zones.

Local and state officials will meet at the Chatham County Board of Education Monday morning to discuss more details about the campaign.
