EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Students in Effingham County don't start class until Thursday, but many are already back inside school buildings.

The district hosted open houses for middle and high school students Monday night. Administrators at South Effingham High School say it's all about community.

The parking lots and hallways were packed Monday night at South Effingham as parents and students prepared for the new year. Principal Mark Winters says it's an opportunity for parents and students to meet new teachers, get class schedules, and then actually walk from classroom to classroom. Every middle and high school in the district held an open house. Winters says they've become community events.

"Parents come in. Extended family members come in. Students who have graduated come back to see their teachers before they head off to college, and it's just a great community atmosphere. It's almost become sort of like a festive event where people are getting ready for fall, getting ready for school, and just meeting old friends that they haven't seen since last school year," said Principal Winters.

The assistant superintendent says support outside is essential for student success.

Open houses for elementary schools will be held Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.
