ATHENS, GA (WTOC) -

The Eagles got things going last week, but now it's the Dawgs' turn to hit the field.

It's 33 days until the opener against App State, so it's time to fine tune their games. WTOC's Ken Griner was in Athens Monday for day one of Kirby Smart's second season.

The Bulldogs got back on the field for the first practice. They're trying to improve their 8-5 record, and more importantly, improve on the 4-4 SEC record. Head Coach Kirby Smart says he's excited to see how well the new guys can learn.

"It's hard when you're out there in summer workouts, to see if a guy learns well, see what a guy does, but when you get in these meetings and you get in the walk throughs and you have a lot of stuff going on really fast, you find out a lot about guys. There's only so much you can get done in sports, and we're going to be in shorts for two practices, but as we move out of shorts, we find out a lot about guys as football is a tough, physically demanding game. We've been talking about being demanding, being physical. These practices are not easy. The idea is to create adversity for your team, find out who the leaders are, and we're going to be able to do that. Not necessarily right away, because you've got shorts on, but as you move into it, you get into scrimmages, you move guys up and down the depth chart, you find out why they respond to things and how they react," Smart said.

Coach Smart went on to say that his priorities are special teams, throwing the ball for efficiently, and scoring in the Red Zone.
