Law enforcement agencies from across the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry will be participating in National Night Out.

The event is designed to build relationships between the community and police. Its purpose is to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and to generate support for - and participation in - local anti-crime programs. The event sends a message to criminals, letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

"To build a relationship, a better relationship, with our community and with the police in a safe environment. It's a positive environment. They love to see the police. We all get together and just have a good time," said Thomas Norris, Crime Prevention Officer, SCMPD.

CPO Norris says when he attends neighborhood meetings, he typically doesn't see any young people at all and added that events like these are a great opportunity for the police and Savannah's youth to interact.

"Most of the time, when kids come in contact with us, it's not always a positive thing, but for them to be able to see adults getting along with the police, it gives them a different perspective of how they look at us, and if they see that we can get along with the adults, they can get along with us just as well. So, we are going to be there to engage them; talk to them," said Cpl. Dion Hurley, Juvenile Detective, SCMPD.

The event also marks the end of the final school supply drive “Stuff the Container.” Officers will be handing out those donated school supplies on Drayton Street.

Savannah-Chatham Metro police will be holding events in several neighborhoods across the county on Tuesday, Aug. 1. For a complete list, click here.
