CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

For some Chatham County students, the school year won't be all that's new when they return to school later this week.

More than 1,000 local children will walk through doors of brand new schools Thursday, a historic first day of school in three brand new school buildings in Chatham County. Each new school will be a positive addition to the school district, the community where it resides, and the students who will attend it.

"They deserve it,’’ Haven Elementary Principal Dionne Young said of her new school. “It's been a long time coming, and the children, as well as the community, deserve a new facility they can have.’’

"We had one student come in with his parents for registration and he looked around a just went, ‘wow,’’’ added Low Elementary Principal, Dr. Jacob Wilson. “I think they will be excited about the new facility.’’

At Low Elementary, Haven Elementary and May Howard Elementary, the impact could go beyond a nice, new place to sit and study.

"I'm hoping enthusiasm for the facility translates into academics and behavior and school culture, all those things,’’ said Wilson. “And that we can do some great work here.’’

"When we were at the old school and they saw drawings of the new one, a lot of the younger ones were thinking that they are now coming to high school, which is fantastic,’’ added Young. “So we hope they will keep that positive energy going with the new building to transform that to their academics to continue with progress and success.’’

But as nice and new as the buildings are, they are missing something.

It is something that, as was pointed out at one of the ribbon cutting ceremonies, will arrive on Thursday.

"On Aug. 3, when these kids come through the doors, “said SCCPS Board Member Michael Johnson, “This is no longer going to be a facility, no longer going to be a building, it will turn into Haven.’’

The first day of school in Chatham County is Thursday.

Memorial Day weekend is in full effect, which means that law enforcement is out in full force. The Department of Natural Resources is also stressing safety throughout the weekend.  Officers say that they'll be cracking down on the usual charges, such as those not wearing seatbelts, or drinking and driving. But they are also on the hunt for anyone who is distracted while driving.  "Well I checked the jail when I left a few minutes ago and we have openings," s...More >>
