SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Residents met with officers and enjoyed food and games Tuesday evening as part of a Savannah Impact Program event on Drayton Street.

The location is special because program workers and volunteers handed out donated back to school supplies and uniforms to local families in need.

"My thing is, if we can give the kids something to start school with, maybe we can keep them off the streets from doing things they shouldn't be doing," said OFC. Mark McCartha, Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department.

Barbers were also at the event, giving free haircuts to kids as they get ready to head back to school.

"We're just giving back to the community; basically bridging the gap for the second year in the row. We just love to give back as an organization, as people...as a pillar in the community," said Robert Samuel, Boyz II Men Barbershop.

This was the Barbershop's second year participating, but the thirty-fifth year Metro Police has held the celebration.
