SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

One of the last nights of summer vacation in the Coastal Empire was one of the most important nights of the year, as several National Night Out events were held across the area.

The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department sponsored the events and appeared at them as a way to build relationships in various neighborhoods. The one held in Midtown at the Savannah Impact Program Office doubled as a back-to-school event with free school supplies helping families start the school year.

In Liberty City, people cheered every time a police officer walked into their event, expressing excitement and appreciation for being able to share an uplifting night with police.

"We want the officers to know that we appreciate what they do for us, we appreciate how they protect us, and we appreciate the service that they give each and every day. It can help them to know that officers are our friends. That's what we were taught when we were growing up, that the officer is our friend and we can talk to them and share with them and they will help us," said Ruby Lipscomb, Liberty City.

There were around two dozen events just in the Savannah area Tuesday night - each one bringing together the public with the officers assigned to that neighborhood.
