SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Summer break is over for several area school districts that are heading back to the classroom on Thursday.

Students in Chatham, Effingham, and Montgomery counties will begin the new school year on Aug. 3.

The buses were ready to roll out at 5 a.m. Thursday morning to start their routes in Chatham County.

Metro police want to remind drivers to watch their speed when driving in school zones. For most of Georgia, 25 miles per hour is the speed limit in school zones. Police say driving just 5 miles over the speed limit could lead to injuries. They say the higher the speed, the longer the breaking distance. Police add that distracted driving is also a big problem when passing through school zones.

Also on Thursday, it's the first day for new Savannah-Chatham County Superintendent Doctor Ann Levett. She will be welcoming students at several schools across the county this morning, including Coastal Middle and Marshpoint Elementary schools, but the first stop on her list is Hubert Middle School.
