Shoppers in South Carolina are looking to save a little bit of money before school starts back in a few weeks.
The state’s tax-free weekend kicked off Friday morning, and stores are already feeling the rush.
The Tanger Outlets – one of the biggest shopping centers in the area – always brings out the crowds when it comes to the tax-free weekend because of the large variety of shops. Since the state of Georgia decided not to have a tax-free weekend this year, stores are expecting more shoppers this time around.
The three-day sales holiday allows shoppers to save close to $3million on items like backpacks, school supplies, and clothing. One of Tanger’s biggest shopping periods is the Thanksgiving holiday, but the manager says the tax-free weekend keeps the stores pretty busy as well, especially since it falls during tourist season – the busiest time of the year for the Lowcountry.
"It's a great indicator for us. It's not an exact science of course, but it gives us an idea of what we're looking at heading into the holiday season, and it gives us an idea of what the shoppers are looking to spend. It gives us some consumer behavior ideas," said Ashley Doepp, Tanger Outlets, Hilton Head.
Just a quick reminder: not everything you think is related to school is tax-exempt this weekend, so to find a full list of what’s eligible, click here.
