SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Emergency management officials credit lessons learned during Hurricane Floyd for a smooth contra-flow during Hurricane Matthew.

The crossing arms that are lowered at on-ramps along I-16, preventing drivers from heading into danger were a big part of that effort.

After Matthew, the Georgia Department of Transportation identified the gates in need of repair and put out a bid to repair those in May.

By July, GDOT selected Ventura Services to do the repair and replacement and the installation of new gates to the tune of $1.1 million. That work starts in August and is expected to end by late November.

30 contra-flow gates are being repaired or replaced over the next 60 days with more than 100 additional gates also being installed. The contract includes the option for four additional renewals in case repairs are needed in the future.

A Department of Transportation spokeswoman says Hurricane Matthew also highlighted the need for gates at seven new interchanges.

While this work is happening during hurricane season, GDOT says they have portable barriers ready to just in case the contra-flow plan is needed while the gates are being repaired.
