BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) - A group of teachers in Beaufort County spent their summer vacation on the beach. But they weren't there to relax, they were looking for sea turtles.
About 15 teachers are volunteering with the Harbor Island Sea Turtle Project. Their job is to walk the beach to locate and take inventory of all the turtle nests on the Island.
The teachers inspect the nests to count the number of eggs that were laid and to help any sea turtles that struggle to find their way to the ocean.
"We live in a beautiful environment. Unfortunately, these sea turtles have a rough time with human interference, natural predators, so this gives us a unique opportunity to save something that unique to our environment here in the Lowcountry," said Eve Heaton, a technology coach in the Beaufort County School District.
Sea turtles typically lay eggs from the beginning of May till the middle of August.
