SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Another record breaking month for the Georgia Ports Authority in Savannah.
In what was its busiest July ever, the Port of Savannah handled more than 336,000 20-foot equivalent container units for a 6.8 percent increase. GPA officials also announcing they've moved 2.33 million container units for the calendar year through July, which is up 10.8 percent.
Georgia Governor Nathan Deal says these numbers show how important our port is to the nation.
"It really is the gateway to much of the eastern seaboard. Some 80 percent of the population of the United States can be serviced with containers that are being unloaded and in fact, those loaded from the port, going to other parts of the world. So, it's a very important part of the national economy," said Gov. Deal.
Governor Deal says he continues to push for the federal funding need to deepen the port of Savannah.
