BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating a church vandalism on Lady's Island.

The investigation comes after someone spray-painted profanity on the sign of the Lady's Island Baptist Church. The church's pastor is speaking out about the incident. He is, of course, shocked, because nothing like this has ever happened in the 23 years he's been at the church.

"This is the first time that we've had someone defame the church or any part of the church's property. I've been here for 23 years and this is our first occurrence in those 23 years - at least that I've been notified about," said Pastor Sam Spain, Lady's Island Baptist Church.

According to the investigation, the incident must have happened overnight. On one side of the sign, someone took gold spray paint and wrote 'explicative Jesus.' The pastor says the suspect or suspects did not leave the paint can behind, so investigators weren't able to trace any fingerprints. However, the church does have cameras and they're currently reviewing that video to see if the crime was caught on camera.

"Obviously, it's a hate crime because of the words that were used towards our savior, and since it was used towards our savior, obviously, it was intended to hurt the church which is His foundation," said Pastor Spain. "What went through my mind was the craziness of people - and the next thing is to forgive them."

Even though the pastor is calling it a hate crime, Beaufort County investigators say they are not calling it that. Of course, the investigation is ongoing. If you have any information, please call police or Crimestoppers.
