Pooler's first homicide since 2012 has some people asking questions.

Violence broke out Thursday night at an apartment complex along Pine Barren Road. Pooler Police continue to investigate the deadly shooting at Oglethorpe Square Apartments.

Some folks are very shaken up after hearing a series of gunshots a little before 9:30 p.m. Neighbors describe how they're normally putting their kids to bed or walking the dog around that time. The sight left many who live there on edge.

"An officer slammed on brakes and said, 'Do y'all see a guy with a gun? Did you hear any shots," said Cole Barfield, resident, Oglethorpe Square Apartments.

A confrontation in front of the building led up to the death of one man. Police were able to make a quick arrest. Twenty-five-year-old Darryl Johnson is facing a murder charge. Johnson lived at the apartment complex. The victim - yet to be identified - did not live at Oglethorpe Square. Johnson claimed he acted in self-defense. Those who live there say this type of violence is not common.

"It really is a safe place. To know it was actually a homicide, it was deadly, it's kind of scary and nerve-wracking at the time time, being that, you know, I do have a family," said resident, Caroline Gerrald.

"I have a one-year-old of my own and there is a school right here, and all these children, and to think in this peaceful and quiet gated community that there was a murder, it's kind of crazy," said Tradacia Rhynes, resident.

We reached out to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office who tells us Johnson did not have any type of criminal record prior to the shooting, and no bond hearing has been set for him yet.
