(Update: Aug. 24, 2017 at 3:15 p.m.): The deceased has been identified as a man who was reported missing in March 2016 to the Collier County (FL) Sheriff's Office.

James Coughlin, 56, was identified through dental records.

His remains are being sent to an anthropologist to determine a cause of death, which appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officers from the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department are investigating human remains that were discovered off of East Gateway Boulevard on Sunday.

Police say the remains were found in a wooded area off of Gateway Boulevard. Officers were called to the area around 11:30 a.m.

Violent Crimes detectives came to the scene and also confirmed that they were human remains.

At this time detectives believe these could be the remains of a suicidal man who was reported missing in April 2016 out of Naples, Florida. Metro police say that authorities in Naples told Savannah Police soon after he was reported missing that he could be in the area near Saturday's discovery.

Both Naples investigators and Metro searched the area unsuccessfully when he was first reported missing.

Metro detectives are working with Naples authorities to make a positive identification.

The remains have been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for further testing.
