POOLER, GA (WTOC) -

An effort to get more volunteers screened and helping in classrooms expanded into West Chatham County on Saturday.

Savannah-Chatham County Public School System leaders hosted information sessions Saturday morning at Godley Station about operation Beacon. So far, the district's received about 3,000 applications for the program.

It places volunteers in schools across the district.

"Because of the great response that we're getting, it really helps us manage it and get the right people into the right schools," said Kurt Hetager, Chief Public Affairs Officer, SCCPSS. "What we're finding is many people will come in and say, 'Hey, I want to help, but I don't know how to get started or where to go.' This process allows us to find out what can they do, what's their background and where's their best match for a school that really needs volunteerism."

The next session is at Islands High School on September 5th from 6 to 8. Applications are also available online.
