BULLOCH CO., GA (WTOC) -

In Statesboro, a familiar law officer returns to duty in a different uniform.

Longtime Bulloch County Sheriff's deputy and chief deputy, Jared Akins officially joined Statesboro Police Department as a detective.

Akins served in the sheriff's office from 2001 until January of this year. He tells us this job offers him the chance to return to criminal investigations.

“That's really been my bread-and-butter. So, it's good to be back doing that, especially with this group of guys who I've worked with, worked many cases with. They've been extremely, extremely welcoming here,” Det. Akins said.

Akins ran unsuccessfully for sheriff in November 2016.
