Traffic Enforcement Operation: Highway 278 & Highway 170 in Bluffton

BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

A multi-agency effort is underway to bring down the number of crashes on Highway 278 and Highway 170.

Agencies involved include the Bluffton Police Department, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, the Jasper County Sheriff's Office, the Hardeeville Police Department, and South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Cars crowd Highway 278 in Bluffton every single day, and this week, more patrol cars will be there too. Officers are fed up and cracking down on unsafe drivers.

"The Bluffton PD along with the Jasper County Sheriff's Office and Hardeeville Police, we're all coming together to really combat the crazy driving, to put it no other way. The crazy driving, that's what's going on currently on Highway 278 and Highway 170," said Joy Nelson, Community Relations Manager, Bluffton PD.

In just a matter of three weeks, first responders worked two fatal wrecks on 278.

"There is too much distracted driving going on on our roads. There are too many people who are speeding and not paying attention to their surroundings, and hopefully, this is one way that we can really tackle this problem," Nelson said.

Police say the problem is more than just drivers on their phones.

"Distracted driving can mean eating a sandwich, putting on makeup; I have even seen people reading a book," said Nelson.

So, pay attention. Officers will not accept excuses when it comes to safety.

"People have to really start to realize as soon as they get in that vehicle and they turn that key on and they back out of their driveway, they are behind a deadly weapon that can kill and severely injure people. So please, when you get behind the wheel, your complete attention should be on the road and your surroundings.

Wednesday was just the first day of the traffic enforcement operation. It will also be happening Friday, next Tuesday, and next Thursday.
