The Georgia Southern Eagles are no strangers to the underdog role.
After all, it was Erk Russell who coined the phrase, "Runts try harder." But the latest chapter in the Georgia Southern underdog story has the Eagles a little more than irked.
Most Vegas sportsbooks have the Eagles as 35-point underdogs in the season opener against #12 Auburn. That is not sitting well with some in the locker room.
"We never go in and expect to lose, so hearing that they're going to beat us by five touchdowns really puts a chip on our shoulder," says senior defensive tackle Darius Sapp.
"At the end of the day, they put their pants on just like we do," says junior safety Joshua Moon. "To me, the exciting thing is the crowd, not the [Auburn] team."
The Eagles will get their shot to prove the oddsmakers wrong next weekend. Georgia Southern takes on Auburn at 7:30 p.m. at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will be aired on the SEC Network.
