Metro Police offering bicycle security tips

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are urging the community to take proper security measures when riding bicycles in the area.

Police say bicycles that are improperly secured or not secured at all pose the risk of being stolen. Throughout Savannah-Chatham County, 10 bicycle thefts were reported from Aug. 6 through Aug. 24. Of those, six were left unsecured.

Metro offers free bicycle registration at each precinct. Bicycle registration assists in locating and returning a bicycle to the owner if it is lost or stolen. Registering the current information is one of the most important steps to recovering a stolen bicycle. Police say to make sure to be as descriptive as possible when filling out the registration form. You can download that here and take it to your local precinct.

Here are a few tips from police on how to protect your bicycle:

  • Always secure your bicycle
  • Use designated parking areas where possible
  • Make sure the locks go through the bicycle as well as both wheels and the post you are securing it to
  • When possible, the best way to secure your bike is to take it indoors. A secure bike is out of sight.
