BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

It's a conversation being held across the state of South Carolina, especially in coastal communities like Beaufort: the ban of the plastic bag.

So far, municipalities like Isle of Palms and Folly Beach already have ordinances to ban plastic bags. Seaside communities are concerned with the plastic's impact on the wildlife. Beaufort County Council approved its first reading of the ordinance. It puts council in a position to look at the issue a little more closely.

"There's forward movement. There's a lot of issues about cost. Do you use fees to prohibit? Do you ban them outright? What is the impact on the consumers? Is it going to cost them more? There are some issues that need to be brought out," said Mayor Billy Keyserling, City of Beaufort.

Beaufort City Council will have this topic on their work session's agenda next month. The towns are hoping that by going to the county, they can develop one universal role for all the communities in Beaufort County.
