SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Georgia Department of Transportation will be making safety improvements to Highway 80 between the Bull River Bridge and the Lazaretto Creek Bridge over the next two weeks.

Crews will be working on re-striping of the Bull River Bridge, providing four feet of separation between opposing lanes. Contractors will also be working on new signage for the bridges saying narrow bridge and indicating the speed limit is 45 miles per hour.

"We asked for a median on the Bull River Bridge. I actually asked in writing for a concrete barrier between the opposing lanes but it was not deemed feasible because of the way the concrete barriers, it is too much for the bridge to support," said Jason Buelterman, Tybee Island Mayor.

One part of the safety improvements is already complete, and a left turn lane has been put in for those going to Fort Pulaski.

Drivers are asked to use extreme cautious of work crews when traveling in these work zones.
