Police Investigate Possible Arson

Heidt Avenue in Garden City. Heidt Avenue in Garden City.

Just hours after a home in Garden City is destroyed by fire, the woman who lived there is homeless and her ex-boyfriend is in jail. The home on Heidt Avenue caught on fire around 5:30am this morning, and police say the had information from the start that the fire was intentionally set.

Sparks were flying from overhead power lines, and while firefighters were trying to get the fire under control, Garden City police were learning someone may have set this fire on purpose.

"During that time, we received calls...from the family members of Craig Stone indicating that Mr. Stone had possibly set the fire at the residence," said Capt. Stephen Stratman.

And police believe they know why he did it. "The residence was the residence of his former girlfriend and they had been having domestic problems."

Police had a chance to talk to Stone about today's fire. They picked him up around 1pm at the Waffle House in Pooler. They arrested him on outstanding warrant charges from the sheriff's department for failure to appear in court.

So far, they haven't charged him in connection with today's fire, but they say charges are pending.

The woman who owns the home is staying with friends. The Red Cross is also helping.
