Hometown Heroes--Dante Brown and Ryan Hunter

Dante Brown and Ryan Hunter spend most of their summer days at Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club. Each day around 5pm, they leave the club to spend some time with an elderly family friend who lives nearby. A few days ago, when they arrived they found their friend in trouble.

"When we got out from the boys club, we went to this lady's house and when we got in we found her on the floor," recalled Dante.

The woman, whose name we are keeping private, was in serious trouble, but the boys didn't panic. They did exactly what their grandmother taught them to do. One of them called her, the other boy went for help.

"While he went to go get the neighbor, I stayed with her and then my grandmother told us that she was on her way," said Ryan.

Jesse Brown, the boys' grandmother, who works in the emergency room at Candler Hospital, arrived a few minutes later.

"When I got to her, she was still incoherent and unresponsive and I brought her around," she told us. "By working in the hospital, I knew exactly what to do to bring her blood sugar up. So I did that and got her around and she came around. She said she did not know what happened, but she said she appreciates the boys saving her life. We don't know how long she had been down."

The woman was last seen by a neighbor around 3pm, the boys got there just after 5pm. There is no doubt that Dante Brown and his cousin Ryan Hunter helped save the woman's life. That's why they are this week's WTOC Hometown Heroes.
