Hardeeville residents will have to continue detouring around John Smith Road for at least two more months. The overpass that crosses Interstate 95 has been shut down since a devastating wreck last month when a tractor-trailer slammed into the support columns.
Yesterday, the Department of Transportation told Hardeeville that they're going to spend at least two more months studying the structural integrity of the overpass. That means traffic will continue to be routed around through Highway 17, which is in the middle of a repaving project.
"The problem is compounded by having to force traffic onto exit eight from John Smith Road," said mayor pro-tem Brooks Willis.
The road is one of the main connectors from Highway 278 into Hardeeville.
